Jane McLean is an independent dance artist and capoeirista.  She began her dance training at The University of Chester, graduating with a First Class Honours and being awarded the ‘Bradbury Prize for the Performing Arts’ 2007.  She then went on to train at Laban studying the Diploma in Dance studies for which she was presented the ‘Mary Zempke Award’.  After graduating in 2008 she continued to work at Laban as a Graduate Assistant. During her time at Laban she performed for choreographers such as Gary Lambert and Fleur Darkin as well as teaching regularly for Artis Education and independently and using her capoeira skills to model for Caterpillar Footwear in a photo shoot on location in Majorca!

Jane studies capoeira with Mestre Poncianinho; her capoeira skills feed into her choreography and performance, giving her a unique skills set, strength, and acrobatic capabilities.  This year Jane has travelled to France, Latvia and Germany to attend capoeira events following trips to Austria, Belgium and Israel in 2008 and Brazil in 2007 - funded by a Gordon Foundation Grant, during which she began research into ritual and relationship in capoeira.  She also performs regularly in venues across London.

Jane loves the challenge and opportunities offered by a portfolio career in dance and as well as performing and teaching has recently found herself working in theatre as the Assistant Director on The Whatworks production ‘Capoeira Fora das Correntes’ (TARA Arts, Nov 09) and as Rehearsal Director for Vanessa Abreu on her latest piece ‘From 1953 to here and there… And then? And never again!’ (Laban, Nov 09).  Jane is inspired by collaborative work and future projects include performing in ‘Resolutions’’! 2010, performing with a variety of artists in a show (working title ‘Tradition et Melange’) conceived by Contra-Mestre Chicote - a renowned capoeira teacher/choreographer in Paris and choreographing and performing a collaborative work created alongside the original composition of composer Sam Salem.
